The domestic dog is a direct descendant of the wolf and retains its ancestor’s pack instincts and strict code of social hierarchy.

From the moment a dog is born it knows that it needs leadership to survive, If they don't get clear leadership signals from their owners dogs can quickly take over the role as pack leader if they think you are not up to it.
